Welu named NSIC Player of the Week
Junior garners Beavers’ second Player of the Week award of season

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) its player of the week for her effort during the week of March 31 through April 6 on Tuesday.

Welu went a perfect 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and singles to help Bemidji State to a 2-1 record on the week. The Beavers improved their overall record to (6-12; 2-2 NSIC).

Welu started the week Tuesday in Moorhead, Minn. by teaming with Sheila Hoberg (So., Bismarck, N.D.) to defeat the Northern State University team of Kelsey Lonning and Jessica DesLauriers, 8-4, and then got the best of Lonning at singles easily defeating her, 6-1, 6-1, en route to a Beavers, 8-1, victory. The next match of the day Welu contributed on both Beavers points as the No. 1 doubles team narrowly defeated Concorida College’s Ashley Leister and Melanie Gail, 9-7. Welu would then roll past Leister in singles competition by the score of, 6-1, 6-3. The Beavers fell in the match to the Cobbers by the score of, 7-2.

The next day saw Welu continue her hotstreak as she helped to defeat Chelsey Stark and Marisa Steadman, 8-1. Welu’s singles match against Stark proved to be her toughest match of the weekend as Welu needed a third set to put away Stark, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. The Beavers defeated the University of Mary, 8-1.

Welu is the second Beaver to garner NSIC Player of the Week honors joining teammate Farrah Steinke (Fr., Crosby, Minn.) who won the award back on March 10.

Bemidji State returns to action on April 12 as it faces off against NSIC foe Minnesota State University Moorhead in a conference play with the match scheduled for noon in Moorhead, Minn. April 13 the Beavers return home for their final regular season matches of the season as they host Upper Iowa Universit at 8 a.m. and conclude with a match against the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles with that match scheduled for 4 p.m.
