April 12, 2003
Beavers win men’s hammer, men’s 4x400m, women’s 5000m, men’s 5000m; Schreiber & Pribula set BSU records

DES MOINES, Iowa - Bemidji State outdoor track turned in a strong performance at the 57th Annual Jim Duncan Invitational, winning four events and earning seven second-place finishes.

Josh Haugan led a dominant BSU effort in the hammer throw, as the Beavers sported four of the top five finishers. Haugan won the event with a throw of 40.74m, while Michael Rydberg finished third (36.08m), Jake Wojciechowski finished fourth (33.20m) and Ben Mettling was fifth (32.88m). Haugan also finished seventh in the discus (39.08m) and second in the shot (13.61m).

Steve Leuer dominated in winning the 5,000m run. He finished in a time of 15:46.67, nearly 13 full seconds in front of second-place John Jripp of Dana. Leuer and Jrip were the only two runners to finish in less than 16:00. BSU’s John Jacoby was third at 16:14.65. Leuer also finished second in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:56.27. He finished behind Drake’s Brent Wilberts, who set a meet record at 3:48.18.

Christa Pribula gave BSU a clean sweep of the 5,000m event. She was the only runner to complete the race in less than 20 minutes, coming in at a time of 19:19.97. Pribula, who made a new school record, finished nearly a minute ahead of second-place Casey Schmidt of Bemidji State (20:18.72).

The Beavers also won the 4x400m relay. BSU’s team of Mitch Cooper, Tristan White, Drew Peterson and Jason Carlson finished in a time of 3:21.39, nearly 3.5 seconds faster than Drake’s B team. Bemidji also raced an unattached team of Jay Prince, J.B. Martin, Pat Lais and Kip Solmonson. That team finished fifth at 3:31.97.

BSU’s 4x100m relay team finished second with a time of 43.18, just 0.37 seconds behind the Drake team. Carlson finished second in the 400m hurdles at 54.46; Steve Schreiber captured second in the high jump at 6’09.50”, just two inches lower than Joey Brunkhorst (Iowa State unattached); and Josie Muzquiz finished third in the steeplechase (13:06.18). The mark by Schreiber set a BSU record - the old one was set back in 1995 at 6'08.25".

Former Beaver Dan Frette competed unattached and turned in a strong performance. Frette finished second in the 110m high hurdles (15.00, wind 1.20), pole vault (3.65m) and third in the 400m hurdles (54.52).

Next scheduled action for BSU’s outdoor track teams comes April 13-14 at the St. John’s multi-events, held in Collegeville, Minn.
