Moorhead, Minn. - Breaking a school record and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA DII Championships in the high jump, sophomore Steve Schreiber continued his dominance and was one of the Bemidji State stand-outs at the Ron Masanz Open held in Moorhead, Minn., yesterday. The event was hosted by MSU Moorhead.

Schreiber has now taken four individual titles in the spring season - all coming in the high jump - after he broke his own BSU record with a leap of 6’10 3/4” on Saturday, almost seven inches higher than the next competitor. His previous mark was 6’9 1/2” at the Duncan Invitational, April 13 as he was searching to add 1/4” to hit that provisional mark before his effort on Saturday.

Other Beaver men to come in the top-five included: Mitch Cooper in the long jump, second (21’11 3/4”); senior Steve Leuer in the 800m, second (1:58.76) - just .07 seconds from first place; senior Paul Quinn in the 3,000m steeplechase, second (10:17.06); sophomore Travis Schwarz in the high jump, fifth (6’00”); sophomore Jeff Spotts in the javelin throw, fifth (49.44m) and sophomore Rich Weber in the triple jump, fifth (43’3 3/4”). Also, the 4x100m relay squad placed third with a time of 42.54.

Senior Martha Miltich led a couple of dominant performances for the female Beavers as she went home with a second-place finish in the 1,500m (5:10.79) - her best effort in this event for the 2003 campaign. Miltich took fourth at the Duncan Invite earlier this season.

Senior Melanie Hoheisel had an excellent day by taking fourth in the 100m (12.54), fifth in the 200m (26.33) and fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.97). Sophomore Erin Suhonen also performed well by placing in three events with her best outing in the discus throw - sixth with a toss of 118’11”.

The Beavers will travel back to Moorhead, Minn., for the 2003 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships beginning Friday and ending on Saturday.
