Day 1 results][Day
1 meet results] After
day one at the 2003 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
Outdoor Track Championships hosted by MSU Moorhead,
the Bemidji State men are tied for third while the women
stand sixth.
"
For the men, I feel pretty good," BSU head coach Craig
Hougen said. "Third is okay. The point total between
us and second is not too much. We should go up to second
tomorrow."
Leading the way was freshman Jeremy Dinius
in the javelin throw as he was second with a mark of 161'8".
Also, receiving honorable mention All-NSIC recognition with
a third-place
mark
is Mitch Cooper. Cooper leapt 22'3 1/2" in the long
jump.
The BSU relay squad in the 4x800m relay performed well
with a time of 8:02.00.
Currently, the BSU men are tied with MSU
Moorhead with 36 points. UM-Duluth is comfortably in the
lead with 104 points
followed
by the 39 points of Northern State.
Breaking their old school
records and leading the way for the BSU women were sophomore
Martha Miltich and senior Josie Muzquiz.
Miltich shattered her record in the 10,000m run by nearly
30 seconds with a mark of 38:45.00 to second overall. Meanwhile,
Muzquiz finished sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with
a time
of 12:27.00. "
I am very happy with some very good individual performances," said
Hougen. "Martha and Josie broke their own school marks.
Caesare (Stimson) and Melanie (Hoheisel) had very fine days
as well."
Stimson, champion of the 2003 outdoor heptathlon
two weeks ago, finished third in the javelin throw with a
distance
of 109'5".
Despite finishing sixth in the long jump,
Hoheisel still had a season-best leap of 17'6 1/4".
Hoheisel has already provisionally qualified for national
competition in this
event.
The women trail Northern State (39) by 17 points. MSU
Moorhead (59) leads Concordia-St. Paul (47), Winona State
(43.5) and
UM-Duluth (43) after seven events in day one.
Competition
wraps up tomorrow in Moorhead, Minn., with field events
starting at 11:00 a.m. and track events beginning at
2:00 p.m.
Note: The top-two individual efforts in each event
are considered on the All-NSIC team. The third-place performer
is honorable
