FARGO, N.D. - Senior Caesare Stimson
(Chisago Lakes, Minn.) used strong efforts in both the high
jump and shot put events to help her to a third-place overall
finish in todays Bison Pentathlon.
Competing in her first pentathlon of the 2004 season, Stimson
was one of only two women to leap 52 in the high
jump. Her final jump of 55 earned her top billing
in the event. She was also the only athlete to clear 32 feet
in the shot put, as her final throw of 33 beat
the next-closest rival by almost two feet.
The event was won by North Dakota State sophomore Kiki Smith,
whose 3413 points were 126 better than second-place finisher
Janie Sershen, competing for Augustana College. Stimson finished
with 3098 points.
Competing just across the frigid Red River in Moorhead, Minn.
at the Cobber Pentathlon, junior Travis Schwarz (Pine
City, Minn.) used a strong finish in the high jump to cruise
to a fifth-place overall finish. Schwarz, who cleared the
bar at 510, finished second in that event, behind
eventual overall winner Aaron Johansen of Dickinson State.
Junior Ben Mettling (Pine City, Minn.) and junior Rob
Kucher (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) posted overall finishes
of 10th and 11th, respectively.
The entire Beaver squad will compete tomorrow in the Bison
Open, held at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo beginning at
3:30 pm.
