WAYNE, Neb. - After Friday’s events at
the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Track and
Field Championships, Bemidji State’s men sit in second
place with 43.5 team points, 9.5 back of Minnesota-Duluth.
The Beavers’ highest-scoring event was the shot put,
in which sophomore Adam Wilson (Forest Lake, Minn.),
freshman Justin Cox (Menahga, Minn.), and freshman
R.J. Gross (Jamestown, N.D.) all tallied points. Wilson
finished in second place with a 49-9 1/2 throw, ahead of Cox
(fourth, 48-3 1/2) and Gross (eighth, 44-8 1/4).
Senior Mitch Cooper (Davenport, Iowa) broke his own
school record, set during the 2001 campaign, with a 23-5 1/4
leap in the long jump. Cooper missed provisional qualification
for the 2004 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships by only
a quarter of an inch. Junior Steve Schreiber (Forest
Lake, Minn.) was BSU’s only other event winner on Friday
night, successfully defending his NSIC high jump crown by
clearing the bar at 6-7 1/2.
Both the men’s and women’s 4x800-meter relay squads
finished fourth. The men carded a time of 8:19.76, while the
women crossed the finish line at 10:04.35.
Junior Caesare Stimson (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) was the
top female performer for the Beavers, finishing in sixth place
in the high jump with a height of 5-3 1/2. The women currently
sit in seventh place with just eight points, but head coach
Craig Hougen is confident that they won’t be idling
there for too much longer.
“We do have quite a few women in the finals, ready to
score some points. Hopefully, we can get it done tomorrow,”
Hougen said.
The final leg of the three-day meet begins early on Saturday
morning. Points are scored on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis in
each event, with first place receiving 10 points and eighth
place garnering one.
