| BSU takes seven individual
first place finishes at Dairy Queen Blizzard Open

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Bemidji State track and field
teams captured seven individual first place finishes on Saturday
as they competed in the Dairy Queen Blizzard Open in Superior,
Wis., on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
Sophomores Joe Remitz (Cass Lake, Minn.) and Sheena Devine
(Harris, Minn.) continued to have their way in the shot put
as both of them captured individual first place finished in
the event. Remitz won with his throw of 56-0 1/2 while Devine's
toss of 44-3 1/4 won it for her.
In the weight throw, Justin Cox (Jr.; Menahga, Minn.) garnered
first place with a toss of 53-2 1/4 while also putting a distance
of 52-10 1/4 in the shot put to finish in second.
The men's team was also able to capture a first place finish
in the pole vault as junior Tommy Crummy (Menahga, Miinn.)
cleared the 14-9 mark, out-jumping the rest of the competition
by over 15 inches. Crummy also placed fourth in the long jump,
just missing a second place finish by a inch and a half as
he leaped for a distance of 20-01 1/2.
M'Kelle Tomberlin (Cohasset, Minn.) also had a good day for
the Beavers as she finished first in the 60-meter dash (8.22),
fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.64) and third in the long
jump (16-5). This marks the second week in a row that Tomberlin
has placed in the top five in each of the three individual
events she competes in.
On the track for the men, Todd Zeidler (Jr.; Plentywood, Mont.)
was able to capture a first place finish in the 800-meter
run with his time of 1:59.77.
Senior Ben Hopkins (Baudette, Minn.) was able to grab two
top-5 finishes in the sprints as he placed second in the 200-meter
dash and third in the 60-meter dash with his times of 23.12
and 7.17, respectively.
Head Coach Craig Hougen not only saw his team perform well
at the event but was also able to take in the success of his
own family.
Daughter Becca Hougen (Fr.; Bemidji, Minn.) and son Mike Hougen
(Jr.; Bemidji, Minn.) each had at least one top-5 finish at
the meet. Becca captured two fourth place finishes, one in
the 60-meter hurdles (10.29) and one in the 200-meter dash
(31.99). For Mike Hougen, his best finish also came in the
60-meter hurdles as his time of 9.06 left him in fourth place.
Bemidji State will next be in action as they travel to Mankato,
Minn., to compete in the Mankato Invite on Saturday.
