ABERDEEN, S.D. - Bemidji State University's Tommy
Crummy leads the way for the Beavers, sitting in fifth place
overall after day one of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference Multi held at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D.
Crummy started off strong with second place finishes in the
55-meter dash (7.00) and the long jump (20-4), collecting
enough points to hold the No. 2 spot overall. But, he would
slip out of his second place standing as he finished eighth
in the shot put (25-2 3/4). After a sixth place finish in
the high jump (5-8) Crummy ended the first day of the men's
heptathlon in fifth place with 2262 points.
"This was something we had anticipated happening,"
said head coach Craig Hougen in reaction to Crummy falling
in the standings after the shot put. "But, we also know
that his stronger events in on day two and I think he'll be
able to make up a lot of ground tomorrow."
Mike Hougen and Joe Bernau are also competing in the NSIC
Multi for Bemidji State's men. After four events, Hougen is
in seventh place while Bernau sits in eighth.
Hougen finished third in the 55-meter dash (7.10) to begin
the competition, but, suffered an eighth place finish in the
long jump (17-2 3/4) before rebounding to finish fifth in
the shot put (33-3). In the final event of the day, Hougen
finished grabbed another fifth place finish in the high jump
(5-8)
Unlike his teammates, Bernau struggled out of the gates, collecting
an eighth place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.80) and a seventh
place finish in the long jump (18-8 1/4). Bernau recovered
in the third event of the day, gaining some valuable points
in the shot put with his second place distance of 36-10 1/4,
but would again struggle, finishing the high jump in a tie
for seventh after clearing 5-7.
The lone competitor for the BSU women, Rebecca Hougen finished
11th in the 55-meter hurdles (9.53), 12th in the high jump
(4-2 1/4), 12th in the shot put (24-1 1/2), ninth in the long
jump (14-8 1/4) and had a very strong finish in the 800-meter
run, taking second with her time of 2:36.94. Overall Hougen
collected 2456 points, good enough for an 11th place finish.
The men's heptathlon will continue on Monday at 10 a.m. as
they complete the competition competing in the 55-meter hurdles,
pole vault and the 1000-meter run.
