| Bemidji State's Remitz
provisionally qualifies for nationals
April 8, 2006
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Adam Wilson has already plastered
his name in the Bemidji State record book for both indoor
and outdoor track. But as BSU opened its 2006 outdoor season
on Saturday at the Hamline Invite in St. Paul, Minn., Wilson
did it again with his performance in the hammer throw.
Wilson, who has been a dominating force in the Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference over the past two years in the
throwing events, finished third in the event with his BSU
record-breaking throw of 165-6.
Although it wasn't a record book, Joe Remitz notched his name
onto a special list as he provisionally qualified for the
NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the shot put. Remitz's
toss of 54-1 1/4 not only provisionally qualified him for
nationals, it was also the best toss of the meet and currently
ranks him 11th in the nation among Division-II athletes.
Aside from a record-breaking performance and a provisional
qualifying mark, the men's team managed to collect a total
of five first-place finishes including Remitz's. In the men's
first competition of the outdoor season, the team collected
five first-place finishes from four members.
Jonathon Hawks collected two of the men's five first-place
finishes as he won both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter
dash. In the 100-meter dash Hawks finished ahead of the rest
of the competition with his time of 10.87. Hawks finished
the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.29, just ahead of teammate
Ben Hopkins who finished second in the event with his time
of 22.71.
Hopkins also narrowly trailed Hawks in the 100-meter dash
as he finished with a time of 11.10, a time that earned him
a third place finish in the event.
Hopkins himself was a part of a first place finish. The relay
team consisting of Hopkins, Rodney Williams, Tristian White
and James Winsor finished the 400-meter relay with the fastest
time of the meet, crossing the finish line in 43.10.
Individually, each member of the relay team also had a successful
day that the meet.
Williams earned himself a first place finish in the long jump
with his distance of 22-1 3/4, nine inches further than the
second place finisher. In the triple jump, Williams' leap
of 42-0 3/4 gave him a third place finish and his performance
in the 200-meter dash was good enough for a 14th place finish
(23.46).
White's other finish came in the 100-meter dash as he finished
in 12th place with his time of 11.45. Winsor's best individual
performance came in the 400-meter dash as he finished third
with his time of 50.48.
In the men's pole vault, Tommy Crummy finished in forth place
(14-3 1/4), a foot ahead of his teammate, Lee Morberg, who
finished in a tie for sixth place after clearing 13-3 1/2.
Crummy also garnered a second place finish with his performance
in the javelin throw. Crummy was the only member of the BSU
team to reach the finals in the event and finished with a
distance of 162-11.
Mike Hougen, who finished the 110-meter hurdles in eighth
place (15.97), along with Crummy and Justin Smith, will compete
in the St. John's Multi beginning on Sunday and continuing
through Monday. The rest of the men's team will next be in
action on Friday as they travel to St. Peter, Minn., to compete
in the Gustie Open.
