MANKATO, Minn. - [results - men/women]
Joe Remitz (Jr., Cass Lake, Minn.) provisionally
qualified for the 2007 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field
Championships in the shot put and Sheena Devine
(Jr., Harris, Minn.) posted an automatic qualification in
the shot put and shattered BSU's weight throw record as the
Bemidji State University Indoor teams got an early jump on
the 2006-07 season Saturday at the Minnesota State University
Preseason Open in Mankato, Minn.
Remitz's first place toss measured 52-03.25 and provisionally
qualified him for his second consecutive trip to the national
meet. Last year, he capped the indoor season by placing sixth
and the national championships to earn All-American honors.
Remits also garnered fourth place in the weight throw with
a distance of 53-01.5. He led a crew of three throwers who
fared well in the meet. Justin Cox (Jr.,
Menahga, Minn.) took third in the shot put (47-11.75) and
fifth in the weight throw (52-07.5) while Zach Preble
(So., Coleraine, Minn.) rounded out the BSU field in the shot
with a throw of 46-07.5.
Preble also cleared 13-01.50 to place sixth in the pole vault.
Other BSU men with top-six finishes included: Matt
Bischoff (Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) took sixth in
the mile (4:38.49), Mike Hougan (Jr., Bemidji,
Minn.) finished the 60-metter hurdles in 9.04 to garner sixth
place, and Jon Clemons took fifth in the
high jump with a height of 6-02.75.
On the women's side of things, BSU athletes in field events
led the way.
With a throw of 48-05.25 in the shot, Devine surpassed the
automatic qualification mark (45-11.25) by more than two feet
to solidify her second consecutive trip to Boston. She also
used a 51-05.5 toss of the 20-pound weight to place third
in the weight throw en route to breaking her own BSU record
in the event. last winter the junior's best throw of 46-10.25
was good for the institution's top throw. In the first event
this season, she has already extended that mark by nearly
five feet.
Her performance in each event should place here near the
top of the national performance list.
Junior M'Kelle Tomberlin (Cohasset, Minn.)
earned a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of
16-02.5.
Bemidji State will officially open the 2006-07 indoor track
and field season at the Northwest Open Jan. 6 at the University
of Minnesota. The team opens at home two weeks later (Jan.19-20)
when the Beavers host the BSU Multi and Super 8 Open.
