BOSTON, Mass. - Bemidji State University junior thrower
Sheena Devine (Harris, Minn.) completed a
perfect indoor season with an NCAA Division II shot put championship
Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Complex in
Boston, Mass. Teammate Joe Remitz (North
Branch, Minn.) earned fourth place in the men's shot put event
garnering All-American Honors for the second consecutive season.
Devine entered the meet after winning the shot put in each
of the eight events in which she participated and was the
top-rated participant heading into this season's championship.
Saturday she backed up that ranking.
Despite surpassing her career-best toss of 49-09.75 on her
second throw of the event, she found herself in second place
with just one attempt to go. With the weight of her national
championship hopes on her shoulders and the four-kilogram
shot put nuzzled between her check and right hand she heaved
the implement 51-00.25 out distancing her nearest competitor
by nearly six inches to claim the title.
Devine becomes the second individual track and field national
champion at Bemidji State since the school joined the NCAA
Division II ranks and is one of just a handful student-athletes
in the history of BSU athletics to stand alone as the best
in the country.
On the men's side of things, Remitz was also outstanding.
In his second consecutive trip of the Indoor National Championships,
the junior bettered his own school record by four inches when
he stretched the tape to 57-04.25 on his third attempted of
the morning. That toss earned him fourth place in the event
and etched his name as an All-American in the for the second
consecutive indoor season and the third time in his college
career. He also earned All-American accolades last spring
after he placed third at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships.
Devine, Remitz and the rest of the BSU trackand field teams
return to action April 7 when they travel to St. Paul, Minn.
to compete in the Hamline Invitational--the first event of
the 2007 outdoor season.
