MOORHEAD, Minn. -- In the first meet of the 2007
outdoor track and field season, the Bemidji State University
squads took advantage of beautiful weather conditions as two
of its student-athletes provisionally qualified for the 2007
NCAA Division II Championships to be held May 24-26 in Charlotte,
N.C.
Joe Remits (Jr., North Branch, Minn.) and
Sheena Devine (Jr., Harris, Minn.), who each
earned All-American status for their performances during the
indoor season, won their respective shot put events bettering
the 2007 provisional qualifying marks.
Devine posted a distance of 47-1 3/4 to earn top honors while
she out distanced the rest of the field measuring 150-9 in
the hammer throw to complete the double. Her provisional-qualifying
shot put mark ranks as the seventh-longest throw of the young
outdoor season.
In addition to winning the shot put with one of the top three
throws of the season (56-9 1/2), Remitz also took first with
a distance of 160-5 and finished fourth in the discus stretching
the tape to 145.0.
On the track, for the women, it was a group of sprinters
that stood out.
M'Kelle Tomberlin (Jr., Cohasset, Minn.)
clocked a time of 13.68 to take runner-up honors in the 100
meters. Shelby Hougen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.)
placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.94) and Nicole
Friend (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) used a 1:01.74
400-meter dash to place third.
Those three runners also teamed up with Kristen Mitteness
(So., Morris, Minn.) to earn a second place finish in the
4x400-meter relay (4:06.54) as well as including Breanne
Woinarowicz (Jr., Stephen, Minn.) in a 4x100-meter
relay race that posted a 52.11 to finish third.
On the men's side of things, in addition to Remitz's success
in field events, Justin Cox (Sr., Menahga,
Minn.) also fared well in the throwing events. The senior
took top honors on the discus (154-5) edging teammate Zac
Preble (Fr., Coleraine, Minn.) in second by over
six feet (148-1), finished second behind Remitz in the shot
put (48-7 1/2) and was third in the hammer throw (152-10).
In addition to success in the throwing events, Jon
Clemens (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) grabbed second place
in the high jump clearing 6-4 before bowing out.
On the track, BSU found success in the 200-meter dash where
Kyle Nooker (So., Green Bay, Wis.) crossed the tape
in a time of 22.75 to finish third while Todd Zeidler
(Sr., Plentywood, Mont.) matched Nooker's effort placing third
in the 800-meter run clocking a time of 1:57.51.
The 2007 outdoor campaign continues for the Bemidji State
men's and women's track and field teams as this week BSU will
have student-athletes participating in the Cobber Open in
Moorhead, Minn. Tuesday and will be at the Bison Classic in
