ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference announced today that Bemidji State University's
Sheena Devine (Jr., Harris, Minn.) and Zac
Preble (Fr., Coleraine, Minn.) have each been selected
as Athletes of the Week for their outstanding efforts during
the first week off the 2007 outdoor season.
Devine was named NSIC Women's Field Athlete of the Week after
she captured first place in the shot put at the Cobber Open
Saturday with throw of 47-1 3/4. The toss ranks the 2007 indoor
national shot put champion No. 6 in all of NCAA Division II
this outdoor season and provisionally qualifies her for the
2007 Outdoor Championships to be held in Charlotte, N.C. during
the last week of May.
Preble took second place in the decathlon at the Papa John’s
D-II Challenge in Emporia, Kan. en route to his NSIC men's
Field Athlete of the Week selection. The freshman used individual
event wins in the shot put (47-08) and the discus (141-09)
to finish just 51 points behind Fort Hays State University’s
Alen Yoder (6,538) who took home the title. His point total
of 6,487 not only sets a new BSU outdoor record, it ranks
as one of the top ten decathlon scores of the season and provisionally
qualifies him for the NCAA Division II Championships.
While the conference honors are BSU's first and second of
the 2007 outdoor season Devine has previously been selected
for the award four times including one occasion during the
2007 indoor season (Feb. 7). Preble's field athlete of the
week laurel stands as the second of his career after earning
the conference award Feb. 13.
The 2007 outdoor campaign continues for the Bemidji State
men's and women's track and field teams as this week BSU will
have student-athletes participating in the Cobber Open in
Moorhead, Minn. Tuesday and will be at the Bison Classic in
Fargo, N.D. Saturday.
