Bemidji State has strong showing at Team Nodak Multi's
Preble captures decathlon title; Hougen places sixth in heptathlon

FARGO, N.D. - Sophomore multi-event athlete Zac Preble (Coleraine, Minn.) rode first place finishes in the shot put and javelin throw to a decathlon championship Monday at the Team Nodak Multi's in Fargo, N.D. Preble posted a score of 6,618 in the ten-event decathlon to edge his nearest competitor, Weston Luetz by 130 points.

After completing five events Sunday including the 100- and 400-meter dashes, long jump, high jump and shot put, Preble owned a 58-point lead over Luetz. The highlight of the day was a victory in the shot put. The sophomore standout stretched the tape to 14.46 meters (47 feet six inches) to out distance the rest of the field by over six feet.

On day two, Preble not only held his lead, he increased it while participating in the 110-meter high hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run.

The high-water mark of the decathlon came in the form of a first-place finish in the discus throw. The distance of 146-9 was good for first place and 761 points. Preble also took second place in the the javelin throw Monday measuring 153-5 en route to the title.

Rehgy Gelo (So., Pecora, Minn.) also participated in the decathlon for BSU, scoring 4,965 to finish ninth.

In the heptathlon, Bemidji State's Becca Hougen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) earned sixth place with a total 3,655 in seven events.

Hougen's highest point total came in the first event of day one. She scored a 690 with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Pearl Walker (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) also participated in the event placing ninth with a total score of 2,765.

The Beavers continue the outdoor season April 19 when they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to participate in the Cobber Outdoor Open.
