Back on Oct. 2, the Bemidji State University volleyball team scratched and clawed its way to a five set victory against Augustana College at BSU Gymnasium. Friday night the Vikings used home court to their advantage to defeat the Beavers and split the season series 1-1.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team held the University of Mary to just seven points in the first set of a 3-0 sweep, setting a rally scoring era (since 2001) school record for lowest score by an opponent in a set. The Beavers won the sets 25-7, 25-21 and 25-18, making quick work of the Marauders to win its third consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match. BSU hit .261 in the match, making it the second consecutive contest the Beavers hit over .260.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team took Quick Bunny’s advice from the Nestle Nesquick commercials and “Shared the Wealth” Friday night at the BSU Gymnasium, defeating Northern State University in straight sets in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest. Six different Beavers had at least five kills in the match, pacing the team to its second best hitting percentage of the season at a .266 clip. With the sweep (25-13, 25-21, 25-20), BSU earns its sixth 3-0 win of the season. The Beaver defense was also stellar, holding the Wolves (8-11 overall, 3-8 NSIC) to a .053 hitting percentage.

The back-to-back reining national champion Golden Bears have now only lost three sets this season and their first in conference play to the Beavers, Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center. The win is a big step in the right direction for a Beaver team that has been lacking to find its place in the conference this season.

Laura Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn. ), Bethany Thompson (Owatonna, Minn.) and Sarah Schwanz (Eagan, Minn.) have made the decision to play for the Beavers and will enroll at BSU in the fall of 2009 while Samantha Hertaus (New Prague, Minn.) and Nicole Solum (Spokane, Wash.) transferred to BSU at semester break and practiced with the Beavers this spring.

In a tight knit battle the Bemidji State University extended its win streak to six over the Upper Iowa Peacocks as the Beavers swept UIU on homecoming Saturday from the BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers earned the victory by scores of 28-26, 26-24, and 25-21 to pick up its sixth win of the season.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match to the Winona State Warriors tonight from the BSU Gymnasium. The Warriors downed the Beavers by scores of 25-10, 25-15, 25-12.

Bemidji State University sophomore outside hitter Nicole Olson (Baudette, Minn.) posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs en route to leading the Beavers to their first conference win of the season over the Northern State University Wolves, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-21), at the BSU Gymnasium. The win was the fifth of the season for BSU, snapping a seven-match losing skid to the Wolves.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team is set to open conference play this weekend as the Beavers will travel to Moorhead, Minn. and Crookston, Minn. over the weekend. The Beavers will open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) against the MSU Moorhead Dragons (6-6) for just the sixth time in school history on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. and then will play the Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles (0-9) on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. The Beavers hold a record of 4-8 this season.

For the first time in school history the Bemidji State University volleyball team played two ranked opponents in one day. The Beavers were swept by No. 12 Minnesota Duluth (17-25, 19-25, 16-25) and went four sets with No. 9 Western Washington before falling, 3-1 (21-25, 31-29, 10-25, 19-25 ) in the opening day of the UMD Kraus Anderson Classic.

After starting the year 4-5 for the second time in three years, the Beavers will play three more matches Friday and Saturday at the UMD Classic. Friday, Sept. 12 Bemidji State will play No. 12 Minnesota Duluth at 12 p.m. and then first time opponent No. 9 Western Washington at 5 p.m. The Beavers will close out the UMD Classic on Saturday, Sept. 13 with another first time opponent, the University of New Haven Chargers at 3 p.m. All three opponents on Bemidji State's schedule have at least a .750 winning percentage to start the season. UMD holds a 6-2 mark while Western Washington and New Haven are both undefeated at 4-0 and 3-0, respectively.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team continued play at the Golden Eagle Classic today as the Beavers played Minnesota State University, Moorhead and Lake Superior State. The Beavers open the season and the Blast versus a first time opponent in the Newman University Jets at 3 p.m. on Aug. 29. BSU will wrap up play on the first day of the blast with a match versus Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Northern State University at 7 p.m. BSU will wrap up its stay in Vegas on Saturday, Aug. 30 when they will play Newman University for the second time in as many days starting at 2 p.m. BSU’s last match in Vegas will pit the Beavers versus Huntington University at 6 p.m., another first time opponent.

The Bemidji State women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish in a tie for eleventh in the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Volleyball Coaches Poll, announced today by the league office. The Beavers, who finished eighth in the NSIC in 2007 with an overall record of 10-17, return seven players from last years’ roster including junior outside hitter Brie Groskreutz (Reedsburg, Wis.) who was named as a 2008 NSIC Player to Watch in the same poll.

It seems as though the Bemidji State University’s senior class just finished participating in the ceremonies surrounding graduation, but in the ever-present world of collegiate sports the recent calendar flip to August can only mean one thing--the 2008 fall athletic season is just around the corner. Monday, Aug. 11, is check-in-day for the BSU volleyball program as the team gears up for its 2008 training camp.

Bemidji State University head volleyball coach Laurie Bitter today announced the Beavers’ 2008 volleyball schedule, featuring three preseason tournaments with ten home matches and head-to-head contests with six teams that were ranked in Division II’s top 25 at one time or another last season. Six of the eight opponents in the 2007 North Central Region Tournament, including 2007 NCAA Division II National Champion Concordia-St. Paul, penciled in as BSU opponents.

Jessi-Beth McCannell of Brandon, Manitoba becomes the sixth student-athlete to sign a National Letter of Intent to join the BSU program for the 2008-09 academic year.

The Bemidji State University volleyball team will host a Co-Ed Hi-Lo 6’s Volleyball Tournament on Dec. 8, 2007 and a Reverse 4 Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament on Jan. 26, 2008 at the BSU Gymnasium. Members of the campus community, Bemidji and surrounding area are encouraged to form teams and compete.
