DETROIT, Mich. - Sophomore Helena
Tageson (Malmo, Sweden) broke a 1-1 tie at
12:42 of the third period to give the Bemidji State women's
hockey team (4-14-0, 1-13-0 WCHA) a 2-1 win and series sweep
of Wayne State (5-8-3, 0-0-0 CHA) at City Sports Arena Saturday
afternoon. The sweep was not only BSU's first sweep of the
season, but it also represented its first sweep on the road
since Nov. 16-17, 2002, when the Beavers defeated North Dakota
5-3 and 4-0 in Grand Forks, N.D.
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead at 4:29 of the first period
off a goal from Kelly Zamora, her seventh of the year.
Bemidji State knotted the score at 1-1 just over two minutes
later when sophomore Kate Robinson (Shanty
Bay, Ontario) notched her second power-play goal of the series
and fifth tally of the season at the 6:33 mark. Robinson's
marker moved her into a four-way tie for first on the team
in goals. Senior Jenny Schnickel (Coon Rapids,
Minn.) earned her fourth assist of the year on Robinson's
goal, while sophomore Nikki Eckebrecht (Hamilton,
Ontario) secured her fifth helper of the season.
Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the second stanza,
but BSU did manage a 7-6 shot advantage.
The Beavers came out hungry in the final period of play, outshooting
the Warriors 7-3. Forward Helena Tageson put an end to BSU's
third period struggles for at least one day, as she provided
the game-winner, her third of the 2004-05 campaign with just
over seven minutes left in the contest. The Green and White's
leading-scorer Kelly Hart (Ajax, Ontario)
extended her point-scoring streak to four games with her ninth
helper and 14th point of her sophomore season.
BSU finished with 20 shots to WSU's 16, marking the second
consecutive game in which the Beavers have outshot their opponent
and their second win of the year when outshooting the opposition.
Freshman netminder Emily Brookshaw (Neenah,
Wis.) recorded the second win of her career after stopping
15 Wayne State shots. Vallery Turcotte made 18 saves in the
loss between the pipes for the Warriors.
Bemidji State connected on one power play opportunity in four
chances, while Wayne State was shut out on four occasions.
The first half of BSU's season is now over, as the Beavers
are off for four weeks. Bemidji State will be back in action
Saturday, Jan. 1 and Sunday, Jan. 2 when it welcomes Cornell
to the John S. Glas Fieldhouse for the first-ever competition
between the two schools. Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m.
and Saturday's contest starts at 2:05 p.m.
Notes: BSU's unbeaten streak (5-0-1) was extended
to six games over Wayne State... Each of BSU's four wins in
2004-05 have come on the road, including a 2-1 win at Mercyhurst
(Oct. 9), a 5-2 win at North Dakota (Nov. 7) and this weekend's
4-1 and 2-1 sweep of Wayne State... Bruce Olson improved his
all-time record to 3-0-1 against WSU... With a pair of power-play
goals in this series BSU has now netted power-play markers
in nine of the last 11 contests... The high-powered sophomore
class picked up seven of BSU's 11 points versus Wayne State,
which improved its overall point total to 18-21=39... Kelly
Hart extended her scoring streak (1-3=4) to four games and
Nikki Eckebrecht extended her scoring streak (1-1=2) to two
games... Tara Hiscock's five-game point streak (3-2=5) was
snapped...
