Women’s Ice Hockey
ROSEAU, Minn. - Bemidji State (3-10-2, 2-9-0 WCHA) played
host to No. 4 Wisconsin (13-2-0, 10-1-0) in Roseau, Minn.,
on Saturday night at the Rams Sports Center. Wisconsin jumped
out to an early 5-1 first period lead and never looked back.
Wisconsin showed why it is number four in the nation with
a 10-3 win over Bemidji State.
The No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers put up five first period goals
to take a demanding lead into the first intermission. The
Badgers got on the board at the 8:38 mark of the first period
as Tia Hanson recorded her sixth goal of the season to give
the Badgers the 1-0 lead. Not even a minute later Grace Hutchins
would tally her first goal of the season at 9:32 in the first.
Wisconsin’s Sara Bauer would record two goals in the
period one which was on the power-play. Bauer’s two
goals was her twelth and thirteenth of the season. Bemidji
State would get on the board at the 11:01 mark of the first
when sophomore Jessica Pullar (Elk River, Minn.) would find
the back of the net, her third goal of the season. Wisconsin’s
Sharon Cole netted the fifth goal of the period for the Badgers
her ninth goal of the season. In the first period of play
Wisconsin’s Sara Bauer tallied three points with two
goals and one assist. At the end of one period of play the
Badgers led 5-1 over Bemidji State.
Sophomore goaltender Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) struggled
giving up four goals while just stopping four shots. Head
coach Bruce Olson made a goalie change at the 13:09 mark of
the first period replacing Brookshaw with Senior netminder
Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.). Luebke recorded six saves while
allowing one goal in the first period.
The second period was much like the first period with the
Badgers dominating. Wisconsin would record three goals in
the second period to give them a comfortable 8-1 lead going
into the third and final period of play. Nikki Burish netted
her second goal on the season at the 10:51 mark of the second
period. Just two and a half minutes later Erika Lawler netted
her fourth goal of the season for the Badgers to put them
up 7-1. Sara Bauer netter a goal at 14:49 to put the Badgers
up 8-1 at the 14:49 mark of the second period. This goal for
Bauer was hat trick for the Badger center.
In the third period the Beavers would strick early as sophomore
Tara Hiscock (Bemidji, Minn.) would net a power-play goal.
Assisting on Hiscock’s goal was Sarah Zuelke (Chaska,
Minn.) The Badgers would come back and score their own power-play
goal on a goal by Grace Hutchins her second on the year. Bemidji
State’s Helena Tageson (Malmo, Sweden) would strike
again on the power-play for the Beavers at teh 12:18 mark
to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Badgers. The Badgers
would answer one more time in the game when Grace Hutchins
would record her hat trick goal at the 18:41 mark of the third
period. All four goals were scored on the power-play in the
third period.
Sophomore goaltender Emily Brookshaw dropped her fifth game
on the year falling to 1-5-1 on the season. Senior Jill Luebke
ended the game with 22 saves on the night while letting in
six goals.
Meghan Horras ended the night with 11 saves. The win gives
Horras a record of 8-1-0 on the season.
Bemidji State went 2-for-4 on the power-play while Wisconsin
was 3-for-6.
With the loss Bemidji State fell to (3-10-2, 2-9-0 WCHA) and
Wisconsin improves to (13-2-0, 10-1-0 WCHA).
Bemidji State and Wisconsin will face off at 2:07 p.m. Sunday
afternoon at the Rams Sports Center in Roseau, Minn., in the
weekend series finale.
