Women’s Ice Hockey
ITHACA , N.Y. - Despite dominating much of the game
Bemidji State (4-14-2, 3-11-0 WCHA) falls to Cornell (5-7-0)
by a score of 2-1. For the second straight night Bemidji State
out-shot Cornell but was unable to come up with a victory.
With the 2-1 victory Cornell swept Bemidji State on the weekend
and now leads the all-time series over Bemidji State with
a record of 2-1-1.
Bemidji State dominated the whole first period as the Beavers
out-shot Cornell 15-to-4 but was unable to get the puck past
Cornell goaltender Flora Vineberg. At the end of the first
period the score remained in a deadlock tie at 0-0.
Sophomore goaltender Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) stopped
the four shots that she faced in the period while Cornell
goaltender Flora Vineberg stopped all fifteen shots that she
faced.
Bemidji State continued to dominate as the Beavers out-shot
Cornell once again 14-to-9 in the period. At the 10:53 mark
of the second period Bemidji State was able to get the puck
past Vineberg. Scoring for the Beavers was Tara Hiscock (Bemidji,
Minn.) her sixth goal of the season and her second goal of
the series. Hiscock’s goal was an unassisted goal. That
would be all the scoreing in the second period and the Beavers
took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
It did not take the Big Red long to tie the game in the third
period as they scored just two-minutes and twenty-six seconds
into the period on a goal by Brianne Gilbert her first of
the season. Cornell would eventually get the game winning
goal at the 15:18 mark of the third period. The game winning
goal was scored by Brittany Forgues her third goal of the
season.
Despite out-shooting the Big Red by a total of 38-to-23 for
the game the Beavers were only able to net one goal and would
end up losing by a score of 2-1.
Goaltender Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.) ended the game
with twenty-one saves in the losing effort. With the loss
Brookshaw falls to 1-8-1 on the season.
Cornell netminder Flora Vineberg recorded 37 saves for the
Big Red and improved her record to 4-3-0 on the season for
Cornell.
Both teams were unable to score on the power-play as Bemidji
State ended the night 0-for-8 and Cornell ended the night
0-for-7 on the man advantage.
Bemidji State will pick up action next weekend on January
6-7 as they will travel to the University of Minnesota to
take on the defending national champion Golden Gophers. Both
games on the weekend are slated to start at 4:07 p.m.
