Women’s Ice Hockey
MADISON, Wisc. - Erin Cody (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) recorded two crucial points last weekend to help the Bemidji State women’s hockey team earn its first series sweep over an opponent this season. For her efforts, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has named her the WCHA Rookie of the Week, the league announced Thursday.
Cody started off her weekend by scoring a short-handed goal - which was the second BSU goal of the first period - in the first game against Vermont, which turned out to be the eventual game-winner in the 4-1 victory over the Catamounts. It was her second goal of the season.
She then added her third assist of the year on the third goal of the opening period, scored by Annie Bauerfeld (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.). Bemidji State added another goal later in the opening frame, which gave the Beavers four goals in the first period.
Those four goals were the most scored in a single period by any BSU squad since Jan. 25, 2003. It was also just the 12th time in school history a Beaver team has scored at least four goals in a single period. BSU has gone 10-1-1 in those games.
In addition to her two points, Cody was +2 in the plus-minus category in the series and fired seven shots on goal. She also took over the team lead in points with five (2-3=5).
She is the second Beaver to score a short-handed goal this season and the first since the first game of the 2007-08 campaign.
Cody joins Emily Brookshaw (Sr., Webster, Wisc.) and Julie Rising (Fr., Millbrae, Calif.) as the three Beavers to earn WCHA player of the week honors this season. Brookshaw has earned the defensive player of the week award twice this year (Oct. 16 and Nov. 27) for besting her personal single-game high for saves on two separate occasions, and also for shutting out the two-time defending national champion Wisconsin Badgers. Rising was named WCHA Rookie of the Week Oct. 9 after scoring two goals in her first two collegiate games, which included the first short-handed goal of the season for a Beaver. Bemidji State players were named conference players’ of the week on seven different occasions last year.
Bemidji State (3-14-3, 0-12-2 WCHA) will be looking to build on its longest winning-streak of the season this weekend when the Beavers travel to No. 9/10 St. Cloud State (Jan. 4-5) for a rematch of an earlier series. Both games will begin at 2:07 p.m.
