January 21, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn.
-- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference today announced that Bemidji State University senior point guard Amy Lawson (Spencer, Iowa) has been selected as its Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts during the week of Jan. 13-19.

Lawson led Bemidji State to its first two NSIC road wins of the season averaging 25.0 points, 8.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 35.5 minutes per contest. She shot a sizzling 16-of-20 from the field (.800), 6-of-7 from behind the arc (.857), and 12-of-15 from the free throw line (.800). Friday, she posted 12 points on 3-of-4 from the field (.750), 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe (.833) while dishing out a team-high nine assists. But the highlight of her week was setting the BSU single game scoring mark with 38 points breaking Holly Logghe’s mark of 36 points set during the 1994-95 season. She also became just the 13th player in BSU history to net 1,000 points in a career placing her 11th on BSU’s all-time scoring list with 1,036 points. Lawson set a new career-high sinking 13-of-16 (.812) shots and 5-of-6 from behind the arc (.833). She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists in BSU 84-82 win over the Warriors. Lawson also joined Kim Babula (1983-87) as the only two players in BSU history to garner 1,000 points and dish out 500 assists in a career.

The Spencer, Iowa native currently ranks ninth in the conference in scoring (14.8) helping BSU to the second highest scoring average in the league (78.7) and twelfth in the nation. Lawson also ranks second in the league and fifth in the nation with 7.29 assists per game and first in the NSIC with 2.47 steals per contest.

The NSIC award marks the first of the season for BSU and the third of its kind for Lawson after she received the award on Dec. 4, 2006 and Jan. 22, 2007. The NSIC award ties Lawson with Stacia Swanson (2001-2004) for the most NSIC Player of the Week awards garnered throughout her career with three.

The Beavers (10-7 / 6-3 NSIC) will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 22 as they step out of conference play for a non-conference tilt with No. 13 Minnestoa State (15-2 / 2-1 NCC). Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. from the BSU Gymnasium.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
