Small Business Development Center to offer course on unemployment insurance

BEMIDJI, Minn. (October 13, 2009) — The Minnesota Small Business Development Center, housed in the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, will offer a course on unemployment insurance on Monday, Oct. 26.

“What Every Minnesota Employer Should Know”
The Small Business Development Center offers a seminar to offer answers to an employer’s toughest questions about unemployment insurance, quickly and clearly. Employers will be instructed on the correct methods to manage unemployment issues in the workplace and provide the knowledge to deal with unemployment issues quickly and decisively. Presenters will explain how unemployment tax rates are determined, what benefits are available, the eligibility requirements for accessing those benefits and more.

The presentation will also cover new unemployment legislation, tips for avoiding common mistakes made in quarterly wage detail reports, instructions for using the Employer Online Self-Service System, common mistakes made by managers when they file an unemployment appeal, and more.

Presenters for the course are Gary Johnson and Wayne Johnson. Gary Johnson has more than two decades of experience working with unemployment insurance issues, including seven years as a tax audior and more than a decade as project coordinator and employer/agent liason with the Unemployment Insurance Division of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Wayne Johnson has spent more than 30 years adjudicating unemployment insurance benefit decisions and develops and edits resource and training material for other ajudicators. He also works in the Unemployment Insurance Division of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development

The course is presented by the Northwest Minnesota Small Business Development Center, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce.
