Varsity Singers host annual community Christmas concerts

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Varsity Singers will present its sixth annual “A Community Christmas,” a double event held on Sunday, Dec. 9 featuring the choir, the BSU Symphonic Band, two vocal ensembles and vocalist Linda Wagner, reigning Mrs. Senior America.

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. followed by a second performance at 6 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.  Admission is a canned food donation for the Bemidji Community Food Shelf.

Always a family-friendly concert, the event will feature performers dressed in Christmas colors, an hour of fun Christmas music and an audience sing-a-long.  The Varsity Singers and Symphonic Band will perform separately and then join together to present “Sleigh Ride,” the sing-a-long and a special “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” written specifically for the Varsity Singers by composer Dr. Patrick Riley of the BSU Department of Music.

Directing will be Dr. Janice Haworth with the Varsity Singers and Dr. Del Lyren with the Symphonic Band.  The vocal ensembles will include The Fundamentals, a men’s group from the Varsity Singers, and Damestimmen, a group of ladies from the Department of Music.
