BSU to host film series on China

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University will host a film series on life in China, beginning Wednesday, March 26. The three-film festival will be hosted by Miranda Zhang, adjunct faculty of modern languages and visiting professor of Chinese, and will be open to all in the area who are interested in learning more about China and its different cultures.

All films in the series will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be screened in Room 115 of the Education Arts Building on the Bemidji State University campus.

The series begins March 26 with "The Spring Time in a Small Town," a 2002 film focusing on a strained marriage and the difficulties faced when a childhood friend of the husband finds his friend's wife to be his childhood sweetheart.

April 2 will see a screening of "Shanghai Triad," a 1995 film set in the Shanghai drug trade of the 1930s. "Shanghai Triad" was nominated for a 1996 Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

The series concludes April 9 with "Farewell my Concubine," a 1993 film telling the story of two performers in the Beijing Opera, stage brothers, and the woman who comes between them. "Farewell My Concubine" was nominated for a 1994 Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
