Trombone Choir and Trumpet Ensemble to perform April 9 concert

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Trombone Choir, together with the Trumpet Ensemble, will present a brass concert free of charge at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9, in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

The Trombone Choir will offer a program of varied works ranging from the music of the classical masters Haydn and Mozart to the contemporary music of Walter Ross, and the jazz and rock music of Jack Gale. To open the concert, the ensemble will perform “Achieved is the Glorious Work” from Haydn’s “The Creation.”

The Trombone Choir performs under the direction of Les Torgerson, BSU low brass instructor. Ten players comprise the Spring Semester Trombone Choir, along with Bemidji community musicians and others from the surrounding area, including Blackduck, Coleraine, and Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Also featured will be the BSU Trumpet Ensemble with three pieces: “The Four Horsemen” by Gus Guentzel, “Torch Dance,” arranged by R.W. Fraker, and “Sonatina No. 2” by Don Gillis. The Trumpet Ensemble performs under the direction of Graham Steeds, BSU acting professor of trumpet.

The concert coincides with International Trombone Week, April 5-12, a weeklong celebration of music that features brass instruments from the trombone soloist to the big band tradition.
