BEMIDJI, Minn. (Jan. 13, 2010) — The Department of Music at Bemidji State University will host a chamber recital featuring members of its faculty on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The recital will begin at 3 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Admission is free.
Featured in the recital will be Susan Nelson, adjunct faculty, on flute; Erika Svanoe, assistant professor of music, on clarinet; Jennifer Swanson, associate professor of music, providing vocals; and Sarah Carlson, director of worship and music ministries at Bemidji’s First Lutheran Church in Bemidji, on organ and piano.
Carlson and Nelson will perform three pieces during the recital: “Suite in Classical Style” for flute and organ by Gerald Near, “Psalms” for flute and organ by Emma Lou Diemer and “Vision” for flute and piano by Hedwige Chretien.
The fourth piece, “Nattsanger (Nightsongs)” for soprano voice, clarinet and piano was written by Minneapolis composer Abbie Betinis for Swanson’s doctoral recital at the University of Minnesota in 2008. The lyrics come from poems by Rolf Jacobsen and will be sung in Norwegian.
