BEMIDJI, Minn. (July 14, 2009) — Bemidji State University Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nancy Erickson announced that Dr. James Maxwell has been named dean of the University’s College of Business, Technology and Communication.
Maxwell’s appointment began Wednesday, July 1.
“Dr. Maxwell comes to us with a broad range of preparation across his academic and other professional experience,” Erickson said. “He has worked in industry and has competed two doctorates. This combination of perspectives is important as he assumes the position of dean in a college where programs are closely tied primarily to career preparation.
“His publication and scholarship record is formidable,” Erickson added. “He has stayed involved in his field, and in that regard he’ll be a good role model for all of us.”
“I am impressed with the faculty in the college because they allow for a deeper level of interaction, participation and program customization, which, in turn, fosters key relationships that provide endless opportunities for continuous achievement,” Maxwell said. “The College of Business, Technology and Communication faculty equip high-potential students with the skills, knowledge and experiences they need to become leaders in a time of intense competition and global change.”

Maxwell comes to Bemidji State from Ashland (Ohio) University, where he has been dean of the Richard E. and Sandra J. Dauch College of Business and Economics since July, 2008. Prior to that, he spent one year as department chair fo the Visual Communication and Technology Education Department at Bowling Green State University, and from 2005-07 was a professor of industrial technology education at Indiana State University.
Maxwell began his higher education career in 1998 as an associate professor of strategic management at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. In 2002, he moved to the business department at Buffalo State College - State University of New York where he remained until moving to Indiana State in 2005.
He spent 28 years in private industry before beginning his career in higher education, spending 13 years with Emerson Electric Company in a variety of roles, including regional vice president, from 1970-83, and 15 years with Toshiba, Inc. as vice president of sales and marketing, from 1983-98.
Maxwell is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and in 2004 saw publication of his first book, “Connecting to the World of Business - a Strategic Perspective.” He has a second book submitted for publication.
Maxwell did his undergraduate work Maryville University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in management in 1988. He also earned his master of business administration from Maryville in 1992. He earned his first of two doctorate degrees in 1997 when he completed a doctorate in philosophy management degree from Webster University. He earned his second doctorate, in philosophy technology management, at Indiana State in 2007.
Maxwell succeeded Dr. Carol Nielsen as dean of Bemidji State’s College of Business, Technology and Communication. Nielsen had served as the college’s interim dean since 2008.
