Snowshoe lacing, intro to lead climbing courses set for Nov. 12

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Outdoor Programming Center will hold clinics on showshoe construction and lead rock climbing on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

• Snowshoe Construction
From 6-9 p.m., the OPC will offer participants a chance make their own snowshoes from a kit.

Starting with a pre-drilled wooden frame, participants will learn to thread nylon laces in the traditional snowshoe pattern and will finish the snowshoes with a coat of varnish. Because of the drying time involved, a second visit to the OPC to complete varnishing will be necessary.

Open to the public, the cost is $60 for students and $75 for others. Pre-registration is required, as class size is limited.

• Lead Climbing
The lead climbing clinic will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the climbing wall in the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center.

Geared toward climbers with some experience, the session will demonstrate the skill of climbing without being attached to a top rope. Lead climbers clip into the rock as they go, setting a course for climbers below them.

The climbing clinic is free and open to the public. The OPC will provide equipment.
