Studying the environmental, economics, and social impacts of everything from contaminants to natural predators to people, researchers at Bemidji State's Center for Environment, Earth and Space Studies (CEESS) are focusing on applied research to better understand, remediate and restore the environment. Serving the region for over 30 years, CEESS and its faculty have been awarded more than $4 million dollars in grants and contracts by federal and state agencies, foundations and industry.
CEESS research includes: a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency study on the ecological impacts of residential development on Beauty Lake, bioconversion of agricultural wastes into ethanol using a multiple enzyme system, bioconversion of potato waste into marketable biopolymers, a sustainable agriculture initiative, a Leech Lake area watershed study, study of water and wastewater treatment technology, renewable biofuel research and development, an Indian Lake restoration project, a shallow lake inventory project, a study on the effects of pesticides use on endangered species, several geophysical studies investigating subsurface geology, hydrology and contamination and a NASA and Minnesota Space Grant.
