7:00pm - Celebrate Equal Pay Day
North Country (the movie) 2005 In 1974, nine of the largest steel companies in the U.S. signed a consent decree with the Equal Opportunity Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Labor Department requiring the industry's mines to provide 20% of its jobs to women and minorities. In 1975, a handful of women, including twenty-seven year single mother Lois Jenson, went to work at the Eveleth Forbes Fairland Plant in order to earn higher wages and obtain benefits to support themselves and their families. North Country tells the story of Iron Range women entering an actively hostile workforce, and it follows their courageous struggle to change working conditions for themselves and for society as a whole. Celebrate Equal Pay Day for women (April 9, 2013) by watching this award-winning portrayal of women fighting for equal treatment in the workforce. Sponsored by the Women Studies/Gender Studies Program at Bemidji State University. If you need an accommodation for this event, please contact Kathi Hagen, Coordinator. Disability Services Office (Sanford Hall) 218-755-3883. If an interpreter is needed, two weeks notice is required.
