Optivation (read the press release) is a joint venture of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College designed to increase collaboration between the University, Technical College, business, industry and other sectors of the region. Optivation was formed to focus efforts on consulting, training, education and entrepreneurial needs of the region.

Studying the environmental, economics, and social impacts of everything from contaminants to natural predators to people, researchers at Bemidji State's Center for Environment, Earth and Space Studies (CEESS) are focusing on applied research to better understand, remediate and restore the environment. Serving the region for over 30 years, CEESS and its faculty have been awarded more than $4 million dollars in grants and contracts by federal and state agencies, foundations and industry.

CEESS research includes: a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency study on the ecological impacts of residential development on Beauty Lake, bioconversion of agricultural wastes into ethanol using a multiple enzyme system, bioconversion of potato waste into marketable biopolymers, a sustainable agriculture initiative, a Leech Lake area watershed study, study of water and wastewater treatment technology, renewable biofuel research and development, an Indian Lake restoration project, a shallow lake inventory project, a study on the effects of pesticides use on endangered species, several geophysical studies investigating subsurface geology, hydrology and contamination and a NASA and Minnesota Space Grant. MARS is a faculty-directed, student-run center uniquely serving the northwest Minnesota business community while providing Bemidji State's marketing students with hands-on learning experiences. MARS research services include feasibility studies, Internet and exploratory research, focus groups, group interviews, telephone surveys, mail surveys and strategic management analysis (SWOT). MARS has completed projects for area businesses and organizations including variety of BSU departments and offices.

As the lead institution for 360°, BSU partners with seven Minnesota community and technical colleges to help find education-based solutions to ease the work force pressures felt by Minnesota manufacturing and applied engineering companies.

Through its "Seamless Career Pathway," 360° has identified and developed new routes for students of all ages to pursue manufacturing and applied engineering careers.
