Title of Work: Youth Suicide in Beltrami County
Presenters, Majors:

Bernadette Gotchie, Nursing
Denise Merschman, Nursing

Faculty Sponsor: Riki Scheela
Abstract: This presentation will examine a population at high risk for suicide. Risk factors, services available, assets within the community, and various solutions will be explored. Data from literature and interviews will be presented to support the findings.

Title of Work: Egyptian Fractions
Presenters, Majors:

Jamie Grieger, Mathematics

Faculty Sponsor: Ivy Knoshaug

Abstract: Egyptian fractions continue to be a subject of interest in modern mathematics.  The historical context for Egyptian fractions will be discussed. Algorithms that generate Egyptian Fractions will be investigated.

Title of Work: Trends in 2007 Waterfowl Harvest
Presenters, Majors:

Mathew Grover, Biology

Faculty Sponsor: Mark Fulton

Abstract: The objective of this study was to see if a small group of hunters, generally from central Minnesota, were experiencing the same patterns of success as the rest of the state.  This data set was collected from eleven primary hunting parties, fifty-three hunting excursions with recorded results and lasted from 29 September 2007 to 24 November 2007.  This study focused on whether hunters were shooting the same species at relatively the same percentage as the rest of the state based on previous years.  It also tried to determine at what times and weather conditions during the season hunters were seeing the best success in harvest, and whether this reflects general migration patterns.  Finally this study looked at hunter success rate per trip to the field by examining number of birds taken in relation to the number of hunters involved in the excursion.

Title of Work: Application of Canonical Correspondence Analysis to Differentiate Desired Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentus) Habitat
Presenters, Majors:

David Grundy, Aquatic Biology

Faculty Sponsor: Donald Cloutman

Abstract: Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) are native to the northwestern US, and are currently listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, resulting in a heightened interest in their habitat preferences.  Population assessments were conducted for the US Forest Service from June through August of 2007 in the Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho.  After collection, fish species data, as well as environmental data were compiled, and a canonical correspondence analysis was performed to determine the habitat preferences of distinct bull trout size groups.  Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) groups were also added to the data set to analyze possible habitat competition between species. Results of the CCA analysis and possible consequences will be discussed.
