Title of Work: A Comparison of Heart Rate and Accelerometer Counts during Race Pace Training, a 5K Race and at the Ventilatory Threshold

Faculty Sponsor: Muriel B. Gilman
Abstract: Training intensity is important for race performance.  Heart rate monitors have been used to monitor intensity, but newer technologies may also be useful.  This study investigated if Actigraph accelerometer counts per minute (cpm) could be used to monitor training intensity.  Five collegiate female cross country runners, mean age 19.4 yrs., wore heart rate monitors and accelerometers while running a 5K cross country race, during a race pace training session and a VO2max treadmill test.  The heart rate and accelerometer counts at the ventilatory threshold were determined from the VO2max test. Statistical analysis was with a one-way ANOVA using SPSS.  There were no significant differences during racing, at the ventilatory threshold and race pace training for heart rates, p=.641, 186.9 bpm, 187.0 bpm and 185.3 bpm, or accelerometer counts, p=.136, 8,914.6 cpm, 10,036.0 cpm and 9,168.6 cpm, respectively.   In conclusion, it appears that accelerometers can be used to monitor intensity.

Title of Work: Bird Migration: Who is Coming Through?
Presenters, Majors:

Trisha Longanecker, Science Education

Faculty Sponsor: Debbie Guelda

Abstract: Migratory bird species are those that make regular seasonal journeys in response to changes in food availability, habitat or seasonal weather. We analyzed 18 different bird species’ arrival and departure dates by observing a small lakeside location at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. The site was regularly stocked with 16 different bird feeds and feeders were observed two times daily, five days a week for four weeks. Findings showed that there was an initial increase of species, and by the end of the observational period, species numbers had declined reflecting baseline resident bird populations. This suggests that during the month of April, Bemidji is an important stopover point for migrating birds.

Title of Work: Continued Fractions; Periodic, Simple and Infinite
Presenters, Majors:

Rochelle Lueders*, Mathematics and Mathematics Secondary Education

Faculty Sponsor: Ivy Knoshaug

Abstract: This presentation will investigate continued fractions; their representation, their patterns and their connections to other interesting mathematics. The historical context for continued fractions will also be examined.
