Abstract: In 1976, John Keegan, a lecturer at the Royal Military Academy
at Sandhurst, published The Face of Battle and changed the way people
understand military history. Traditionally people looked at political or
diplomatic factors concerning warfare or considered battles from the point
of view of generals. Keegan looks at the soldier, saying time and time again,
that despite technology, leadership, terrain, or logistics, the biggest influence
on a battle or a war is the soldier. I look at this and other recurring ideas
throughout several of Keegan’s works, and criticism he has received. |

Title IX: Helping or Hurting College
Athletics |

Abstract: My presentation will be a documentary on the topic of Title IX
and how it affects athletics here at Bemidji. I will be taking an in-depth look
at how national legislation and enforcement challenges a smaller school.
I ask whether or not Title IX is helping or hurting Bemidji sports. I will be
finding the answer to this question by doing interviews with several coaches,
players, and administration during the course of my documentary. I hope that
the findings help show what improvements can be made to the current Title
IX legislation so that schools such as Bemidji state are better able to proved
athletic equality. |

Abstract: The Iraq War has been covered differently than any other war
in the history of the United States. This research seeks to determine if news
photos of the Iraq War have increased apathy among people between the
ages of 18 to 24. The researcher surveyed Bemidji State University students to
determine their feelings, interests and concerns about the Iraq War. The survey
also included questions about the number of Iraq War photographs students
have seen of death, coffins, bloody battles of combat, severely wounded
American soldiers, severely wounded Iraq soldiers and severely wounded Iraq
civilians. The researcher examined the different news outlets students between
the ages of 18 to 24 use and studied the Iraq War photographs shown through
these mediums. |

Abstract: Families with children are the fastest growing homeless population in the United States today. Accounting for 40% of the homeless population, over 1 million children are homeless each night. Homeless children display a broad range of complex and interrelated social, educational and health care needs. These children are deprived of their most basic physiological needs; food, shelter, clothing, safety, and love. It is only when those basic needs are satisfied that the barriers to accessing education and health care can be addressed. We will be exploring and assessing the impact of public health nursing on homeless families and their children. |

Abstract: The Library at the Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is a
much used and little organized part of the Club. The Software Engineering
team was approached with a request to develop software to manage and
search the collection. The SE team decided on a two-pronged approach: an
application to allow staff to enter the data about the books and a Web-based
interface for the children for finding books of interest. The thread that ties
the two parts together is the database of book information. Searching can be
done at two levels: a visual search driven by pictures of categories and subcategories or an advanced, text based search for more experienced users. The
application for data entry attempts to auto-find book information to minimize
the work for the staff. Staff can also modify the data in the database as needed
and produce select reports. |

The Samurai’s Rebirth: Japan’s
Increasing “Offensive” Security Capabilities |

Abstract: This thesis studies the increasing “offensive” nature of Japanese
security capabilities in a nation which has major restrictions on military
capability. There are regional tensions in East Asia that have the potential
to escalate to armed conflict. Other countries in the region have increased
their levels of armament but how has Japan reacted? I look at three major
acquisitions by Japan that have created controversy, then examine the role
public opinion has towards issues of defense, including external and domestic
considerations. Two major data sets on public opinion, the Global Attitudes
Project and the Asia Barometer, are used. I find that external factors are a
part of the reasoning for increased diversity in re-armament and levels of trust
in domestic institutions are critical to an understanding of Japanese defense
issues. |
