Title of Work: Body Slam!: An Ethnographic Study
of Professional Wrestling and
Children.
Presenters, Majors:

Dana Haberman, Mass Communication

Faculty Sponsor: Virgil Bakken
Abstract: With its key demographic targeting children to early adulthood,
it is no doubt that professional wrestling is an influence in today’s youth
worldwide. Children watching television are no longer riding bucking broncos
or chasing down imaginary train bandits; instead they fly off of turnbuckles
and wear elaborate belts around their waists. For these children, heroes
don’t carry guns; they are armed with words and fists. The hypothesis of
this study is to determine whether children who view professional wrestling
on television become more violent and begin to behave more aggressively.
The methodology used for this study is ethnography in communication. By
observing children who watch professional wrestling and those who do not,
we have the possibility of learning how these children behave and how this
behavior is related to professional wrestling.

Title of Work: The Geometry and Motion of
Nematode Sperm Cells
Presenters, Majors:

Nicole Haugen, Biology, Mathematics

Faculty Sponsor: Richard Koch, Elizabeth Rave

Abstract: The movement of Ascaris suum sperm cells is caused by protrusive,
adhesive and contractile forces that act inside the cell. Using biological
justifications, a discrete, 2-D geometric model of the forward motion and
turning of the cell is developed. The general assumption used is that the
internal pH level of the lamellipod is responsible for motility. The main focus
of this model is the protrusion of the front boundary of the cell, although
contractile and adhesive forces are present in the model. Protrusion at the
front of the cell is accomplished through the addition of individual protein
units (referred to as Major Sperm Protein (MSP) monomers) to the front
end of an already existing bundle composed of these MSP monomers. This
model only considers MSP in their bundled form because that appears to be
responsible for protrusion and creates the framework for the shape of
the lamellipod.

Title of Work: How Perfectionist Tendencies
Contribute to the Use of
Either Maladaptive or Adaptive
Coping Strategies
Presenters, Majors:

Kirsten Hengstler*, Psychology

Faculty Sponsor: Marsha Driscoll

Abstract: Perfectionism has two dimensions: maladaptive and adaptive, both
of which have different outcomes and create different possible experiences.
This paper is a literature review of articles pertaining to negative and positive
perfectionism as well as the coping strategies associated with each. Two
hypotheses emerged during preliminary research: Maladaptive perfectionism
leads to a series of negative outcomes including poor coping strategies in times
of stress, specifically eating disorders in athletes (Hypothesis 1); and adaptive
perfectionism is associated with more positive outcomes including healthy
forms of coping in times of stress (Hypothesis 2). The research reviewed showed
strong support for both of the hypotheses, and provided information applicable
to the field of athletics capable of decreasing the use of poor coping strategies
and creating better opportunities for happiness
and success.

Title of Work: A Family’s Path
Presenters, Majors:

Nancy Holm+, History, Indian Studies

Faculty Sponsor: Thomas Murphy

Abstract: Each individual has a story to tell, but with the aid of Ancestry.
com, military records, and other public records, we can research their stories
and create a history of the past. Jim and Ramona Holm married on July 2,
1955, and lived in Aitkin County, Minnesota, and their families have made
their home in the United States for over 400 years. These ancestors participated
in the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and they
have a storyline to inform later generations. This study will connect Jim and
Ramona Holm to that American past and show the importance of family
histories to a broader historical narrative.
