Title of Work: Going, Going, Gone to Far: A look at
How Shows and Sports Analysts on
ESPN Affect Ordinary Sports Talk
Presenters, Majors:

Sidney Johnson, Mass Communications

Faculty Sponsor: Virgil Bakken
Abstract: ESPN, a channel known for its live coverage of sporting events
and it’s in depth sports journalism, contains knowledgeable and persuasive
sports analysts whom reign supreme as voices of authority. Although it may
be inevitable, the sports analysts may be too opinionated in their analyses,
thus delivering news that is accompanied with plenty of bias. The purpose of
this study is to measure how effective some of the sports analyst on the more
popular ESPN programs may be at swaying the opinion of the public, and
gauge how much expert sports discourse makes it into every day sports talk.
I will conduct a survey and an experiment; both collecting responses about
certain issues in the world of sports from people who do and people who don’t
watch ESPN. I expect that there will be a noticeable difference in opinion
between the two groups.
