Title of Work: Bemidji State Women’s Hockey:
Factors Influencing the Continuation
of Playing at the Elite Level
Presenters, Majors:

Monica Rawlings, Mass Communication

Faculty Sponsor: Virgil Bakken
Abstract: I am trying to determine what factors influence the continuation
of playing hockey at the elite level for women. In conducting my research,
I used an ethnographical approach to assess the attitudes of female hockey
players, as well as conducting personal narrative, semi-structured interviews
to further my research. The working hypothesis for my research paper is that
most members of the team continue to play because of parental support. My
research questions would then be: R-1 Do players still find enjoyment in the
game and if so why? R-2 Who are the role models for these players? R-3 What
experiences shape the athlete’s outlook of hockey? This project is important
because there needs to be more life stories of women and culturally diverse
groups. More women’s voices need to be heard and analyzed to expand options
for both genders.

Title of Work: History, Saga and Archeology: Great
Kings and Great Armies of England
in the 9th century
Presenters, Majors:

Erik Rundquist, History, English

Faculty Sponsor: Kyle Crocker, Thomas Murphy

Abstract: Using archeology, historical documentation and the written
saga to compare and resolve the questions involved with the subject; this
study looks at the British isles during the reign of Alfred the Great and the
influences of Danish raiders. Also being discussed are the problems with
individual sources and relying solely on one field for answers, as well as
answers to what can be reasonably assumed about the Danish occupation
of England between 865 and 1066. Further discussion will be on what is
still unknown or unclear and openly debated. Finally, there will be some
discussion on using the before mentioned sources to produce a work
of fiction.
