Abstract: Public post-secondary institutions vary greatly in the way in
which they are organized. Some institutions have become part of a larger
system, in hopes to share costs and centralize administration, while others
have remained more autonomous. My research is focused on the benefits
and shortcomings of centralized systems of higher education and used data
from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) compiled
from over 650 public institutions. From which, I have analyzed statistics
such as tuition and fee costs and their relationship to the institution being
a part of a centralized system. Preliminary findings of my analysis indicate
that in the great plains region tuition and fee costs are actually higher for
students attending four-year public institutions within a larger system, (such
as MnSCU), than those attending autonomous campuses in the same region.
Curiously, these findings contradict analysis of national data. |
