Title of Work: Publication Processes Research and
Product Design
Presenters, Majors:

Faculty Sponsor: Barbara Hanus

Abstract: Three students formed a design company consisting of a Creative
Director, Production Manager and Budget Manager. The student design
company researched and designed a promotional campaign for a customer/
company’s product or service. The visual print campaign includes the
following: a 12 or 16 page full color catalog of products/services; a full color
“quick-start - how to use” instructional brochure/flyer/booklet; a 4 to 6 panel
full color promotional brochure with a die cut for promoting specific product
or service’s features through a specific distribution method; two 15” x 35” full
color 1 sided promotional panels for the products/services that could be used in
a store or table display exhibit. Prototypes of each print component will be on
display in Bridgeman Gallery BN140. Students’ research documentation will
be summarized in a “Creative Brief” which includes the Project Summary/
Background, Audience Analysis, Goals/Objectives, Communication Strategy,
Job Specifications, Production Estimates and Budget with Timelines for
production.

Title of Work: Doing Drugs: A Criminalist Intern’s
Experience in Identification of
Controlled Substances
Presenters, Majors: Matthew Fuchs, Chemistry
Faculty Sponsor: Julie Larson, Jennifer Jannetto

Abstract:Controlled substances are a huge problem in today’s society.
Accurate analysis and identification of suspected controlled substances is
important for prosecuting individuals whom illegally possess them. In this
report, wet chemistry and instrumental techniques for controlled substance
identification, as performed by criminalists of the St. Paul Police Dept. Crime
Lab, will be explored. An overall internship experience within the crime lab
will also be examined and will include experiences in fingerprint development
and collection, biological evidence collection, firearm function examinations,
and processing of major crime scenes.

Title of Work: Simultaneous Adsorption of Nitrate,
Phosphate and Sulfate on Magnetized
Aggregrates Made of Bio-polymers
and Clays
Presenters, Majors: Marcus Goodwin, Environmental Studies
Leif Ronnander, Environmental Studies
Garrett Tisdell+, Environmental Studies
Faculty Sponsor: Dragoljub Bilanovic

Abstract: Nano-size aggregates made of clays and bio-polymers can be used
as sorbents in removal of pollutants from water. The aggregates are, because
of their size, rather hard to separate from liquids. Separation of the aggregates
can be made fast and easy by pre-coating aggregated with magnetite.
Magnetized aggregated were prepared from two kinds of clays (bentonite and
kaolin) and two bipolymers (starch and xanthan). The aggregates will be tested as sorbents in simultaneous adsorption of nitrate, phosphate and sulfate
adsorption kinetics and to determine adsorption capacity of the aggregates.
