Title of Work: Bemidji State University Elementary
and Early Childhood Education
Majors- Math Games
Presenters, Majors:

Aimee Wermager, Elementary Education-
Math Specialty
Kayla Dagestad, Early Childhood
Education

Faculty Sponsor: Kathleen Sonsteng

Abstract:The Professional Education Department at Bemidji State University
offers an Early Childhood Education major, which licenses teachers from
birth through grade three, as well as an Elementary Education major, which
licenses teachers from kindergarten through 8th grade or preschool through
6th grade. One required course for both majors is ED 3221-Elementary Math
Methods. An assignment in this class was to develop a game that teaches or
enforces an appropriate math concept. Students presented their games to
the class and were encouraged to use these games in their future work with
children. Our presenters will be sharing their own games as well as games
developed by their classmates.

Title of Work: Baseflow Contribution to
Groundwater Discharge, Clearwater
River, Bagley, Minnesota
Presenters, Majors: Ruth Winsor, Environmental Studies
Faculty Sponsor: Tim Kroeger

Abstract: During the months of June 2008 to October 2008, stream discharge
rates were gaged on the Clearwater River in the Bagley, Minnesota area.
Downstream discharge rates were typically greater then the sum of the surface
water tributaries upstream that included flow from a small drainage ditch out
of the surrounding fen, a stormwater retention pond outlet and a brook that
flows into the river. The outward flow of groundwater from the streamside fens
into the river (baseflow) is believed to be the cause of the higher discharge
rate at the downstream site. During the dry summer months, this groundwater
discharge is valuable for sustained flow but is also believed to cause anoxia in
the stream.

Title of Work: An Investigation of Intoxication
Levels of Designated Drivers
Presenters, Majors: Sara Zimmerman, Psychology
Megan Stow, Psychology
Collin Saino, Psychology
Faculty Sponsor: Angela Fournier

Abstract: Reports show that 20.7% of college students frequently become
intoxicated from alcohol (Wechsler, Lee, Kuo, & Lee, 2000) and that some
students serving as designated drivers actually drive while intoxicated, putting
them at risk for alcohol-related vehicle crashes. The present research involved
assessing the actual intoxication level and level of psychomotor impairment
of students serving as designated drivers. Data were collected outside of
local drinking establishments via self-report survey questions, a standard
field sobriety test, and analysis of blood alcohol concentration via handheld
breathalyzers. Findings will be presented and implications for future
intervention will be discussed.
