Poster Guidelines
Posters will be displayed on easels or tables, so your poster needs to be self-standing. Posters
should be no larger than 4'x 4'.
The poster should be mostly a visual display of photographs, diagrams, graphs, etc. In many
ways it is analogous to billboard so your poster should be designed with
the goal of attracting attention.
The title should be at the top of the poster, and it should be large enough to be read from
10 to 15 feet away. Other text should be large enough to be seen from
four to five feet away.
Regardless of the topic, the poster should have an introduction and a conclusion. The poster should
have a logical flow. You may wish to number the panels so the flow is
obvious to viewers.
Typically, each figure should have a descriptive title. In many cases the figure will also have
a caption, below the figure, in smaller type.
In addition to the poster, you should also prepare a two or three minute oral presentation, which
you will use to explain your poster to viewers.
A poster session is an opportunity to entertain questions that might help you focus on problems
with your project, as well as to allow scholars with similar research
interests to interact with you in a collegial setting.

Tri-fold posters are available in Sattgast Main Office S230. They are free
to all participants.
Make sure fonts used on poster are large enough for people to see a few feet
back. Posters are suppose to be a visual support to your comments. They
need not be full of specifics. Rather, they are going to give the audience
a general idea of your project. Ideally, your audience will be interested
enough to ask more specific questions.
If your presentation is such that it is not amenable to a poster other
options are available. However, please make sure that your needs can be
accommodated with a 4x4 table.
If you have specific needs or questions please send inquiries to Julie
Larson at jelarson@bemidjistate.edu or call 755-2791.
