Susan Nelson is the instructor of flute at Bemidji State University. She attended Chatham College in Pittsburgh, where she studied flute with David Tessmer and performed with the University of Pittsburgh Chamber Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. Her graduate study continued with Betty and Roger Mather at the University of Iowa, and with Alexander Murray at the University of Illinois.

Since coming to Bemidji in 1987, she has been a teacher, a performer in faculty chamber music recitals and with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, and an instructor in programs for the Region 2 Arts Council, the Five Wings Arts Council, and the Bemidji State University MusiCamp.

She is the author of several journal and encyclopedia articles on flutists and historical woodwind recordings, including discographies of flutists Georges Barrere and Marcel Moyse, a survey of early woodwind recordings in the 1993 Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound in the United States, and a biographical article on composer/conductor Werner Janssen in the American National Biography, published by Oxford University Press in 1999. Her book, The Flute on Record–the 78rpm Era, was published by Scarecrow Press in 2006.
