Mary Fairbanks has been a faculty member for the Bemidji State University School of Nursing since 2009. After 24 years as a Commissioned Corps officer with the US Public Health Service, she retired from Indian Health Service to teach nursing.
Her career with IHS included nursing roles in small rural hospitals, a Tribal health program and the regional IHS office. As a career USPHS officer, she served American Indian tribes and deployed for public health emergencies including a mental health incident and Hurricane Katrina.
Mary has a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a Minor in Public Health from the University of Minnesota and numerous awards for her work in nursing and public health.
Her interests are stress in American Indians and increasing American Indians into nursing. She is a certified Laughter Yoga Leader and trained under the leadership of Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga.
Mary is a White Earth Band member, is married, and has three children.
