Carl Sewall began full-time at Bemidji State in the fall of 2007. Previously, he taught composition and communications courses at Red Lake Nation College. Carl teaches advertising courses as well as “Persuasion in the Media,” “Mass Media and Society,” and “Media Ethics.”
Sewall received his M.A. in English in 2005. His thesis dealt with political issues in Shakespeare’s Macbeth — arguing that the play reinforces the absolutist ideology of King James. Partly owing to that research, he has maintained an interest in the persuasive power of the entertainment media and the subtle force of its propaganda. Other interests include: the problems and requirements of democratic media, the communicative force of literature and art, and the media’s relationship with social change.
In addition, Carl is an avid fisherman and sometime bird hunter. Hence, he enjoys living in Bemidji with its numerous waterways and abundant public forests.
