Installing a Network Printer Using Windows XP Professional

These instructions will show the steps to properly attach to a printer hosted on Bemidji State University NetWare servers. Attaching to a network printer is done to allow printing by multiple computers to a network printer.

Before you begin:

Be sure that the computer you are using is attached to the NetWare server and that you have successfully logged in with a valid username and password (Novell). You must be using a Windows XP workstation for these instructions to be useful. Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT 4 instructions are not covered in this document.

Open the Printers folder:
Click on the “Start” menu, move the cursor to “Settings” and then click on “Printers and Faxes”

Click on the “Add a Printer” icon.

The Add Printer Wizard opens. Click “Next”



Select the “A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer” radio button, and click “Next”

Select the “Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, select this option and click Next): Click “Next” to browse for the print queue

Double-click NDPS Printers


Double-click NDPS Controlled Access Printers

Your context will appear. Double-click <Department>.<xx>.FS


The printers in your building will appear in the following format: “Building””Room”_”Manufacturer””Model”

Locate the printer you want to install and click on it. When the Status is “Ready” click “Next.” The printer drivers will automatically be installed from the server.

If you do want this to be the default printer, click “Next”
If you do not want this to be the default printer, click “No”, then click “Next”


Click “Finish”
The printer will now be available to select from within your programs.

There may be additional features needing installation such as Duplex printing, Tray settings, etc. Please call Computer Support at 755-3777 for assistance.
