Configuring Netscape 6.2 or Mozilla

This document describes how to configure Netscape version 6.2 or higher or Mozilla for optimal performance with Bemidji State University's NIMS e-mail server. The instructions provided here are for the convenience of our customers only.

These instructions are distinctly different then the procedure for configuring Netscape 4.x for use with Bemidji's email system. As Netscape 4.x is pre-configured on University issued machines, if you are experiencing trouble with Netscape 4.x, please contact the Bemidji State University Computer Training and Support at ~218-755-4207~.

  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP). Enter ~stmail.bemidjistate.edu~ for Server Name. Check the box marked User name and password and enter your Bemidji State University username ( ex: user1ran for Random User but not Random.User ) in the field provided. For Use secure connection (SSL) select Always.

Strongly recommended additional setting

  • From the Edit menu, select Preferences. Select Advanced from the Category list. Uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript for Mail & Newsgroups. This is an important security setting which prevents possibility dangerous script code which may be embedded in e-mail messages from being run. It is STRONGLY recommended.
