Faculty Laptop Program
FAQs

(Check back regularly for updates...)

Can I purchase my current laptop?
No. The State of MN has regulations that prevent us from selling computers to specific individuals. In addition to that, we plan to use these to upgrade the laptops currently being used by Graduate Assistants, Adjunct faculty, etc.

What will happen to the laptops that we are turning in?
They will be redistributed as needed throughout the University giving highest priority to instructional purposes. Teaching Graduate Assistants, Adjunct faculty and Fixed-Term faculty who are not eligible for the laptop program will be given preference.

How long will you keep the laptop I’m turning in? If I forget to move some files, how long will I be able to get access to my laptop?
We will store your laptop, or an exact image of the hard drive, for six weeks from the time you turn it in.

I need access to a floppy drive. What should I do?
If you need access to a floppy drive on a regular basis, you may want to purchase a USB floppy drive. For occasional use we recommend that your department purchase one or two to share. You should also consider moving your files from floppy disks other media such as CDs.

Where can I get prices and ordering information on accessories for my new laptop?
We will provide that information during the Orientation and Upgrade Sessions. The information will also be posted here on the ITS Website.

The new laptops have wireless capabilities. What benefit will that provide for me?
At this time Bemidji State does not have wireless access points on campus so you will not be able to use wireless on campus. You may find it useful for connecting to internet from airports or at home if you have a wireless gateway.

Can I upgrade or repair my laptop on my own?
No, do not open the case to do any upgrades or repairs on your own. Computer Support has trained professionals to take care of repairs and upgrades for you. They also know what could cause a warranty to become null and void.

Can I keep my current laptop carrying case?
Yes. If you prefer the carrying case that you currently have you can keep it instead of taking one of the new cases. You can let us know when you attend the Orientation and Upgrade Session.

How long do the batteries last on the new laptops?
Gateway - ~4 hours / Mac - ~3 hours.
