New Proxy Service Implemented

Effective Monday, February 7, the A. C. Clark Library is employing a new proxy server to authenticate Bemidji State University students, faculty, and staff who wish to use electronic resources which require such authentication for off-campus use. Because it does not require the user to modify any settings in his or her web browser, this new server will make it easier for BSU students, faculty, and staff to access many of the library's electronic resources from off campus.

If you have NOT configured your web browser to use proxy services, there is nothing more you need to do to your web browser. You just want to be certain that when you are off campus and wish to use one of the resources listed in the first section of the library's Ready Reference Resources page, be sure to point to the links which start with "Off-Campus Access to...." Upon clicking on such a link you should see a page titled Authentication Login Form. Enter your barcode number (the 14 digit number, beginning with 20105, found below the barcode on your Bemidji State University identification card) and PALS password, then click on Login. Please note: Do not check the "Using a proxy" box unless it is appropriate to the type of Internet service you are using.

If prior to February 7, 2005 you have configured your web browser to use proxy services, you will need to undo this configuration or the new proxy services will not work for you. To undo your previous configuration, please follow the directions below which are relevant for the browser you have used for proxy services.

    Internet Explorer

    • Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
    • Click on the Connections tab.
    • If you are using dial access to your Internet service provider, click the Settings button. If you are accessing the Internet via DSL, cable modem, or a local area network, click on the LAN Settings button.
    • Clear the contents of the Address: box and un-click the check box labeled Use automatic configuration script.
    • Click OK and your browser will now be cleared of the older-style PALS proxy services.

    Netscape

    • Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences.
    • In the "Category" panel on the left side of the "Preferences" window, expand the Advanced choices and then click on Proxies.
    • Clear the PALS URL information from the Automatic proxy configuration URL field and then click on the radio button for Direct connection to the Internet.
    • Click OK and your browser will now be cleared of the older-style PALS proxy services.

    Mozilla Firefox

    • Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
    • In the "General" section of the "Options" window, click on the Connections Settings button at the bottom of the window.
    • Clear the PALS URL information from the Automatic proxy configuration URL field and then click on the radio button for Direct connection to the Internet.
    • Click OK and your browser will now be cleared of the older-style PALS proxy services.

    Using the Proxy Service

When you are off campus and wish to use one of the resources listed in the first section of the library's Ready Reference Resources page, be sure to point to the links which start with "Off-Campus Access to...." Upon clicking on such a link you should see a page titled Authentication Login Form. Enter your barcode number (the 14 digit number, beginning with 20105, found below the barcode on your Bemidji State University identification card) and PALS password, then click on Login. Please note: Do not check the "Using a proxy" box unless it is appropriate to the type of Internet service you are using.

This process will allow you, with one simple login, to access virtually all of the resources available on the Library's Ready Reference Resources page. If you need assistance with this process, please contact the A. C. Clark Library Reference Service at 218-755-3342.
