Timber appraisal accuracy session set for Jan. 28

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A natural resources presentation entitled “Timber Appraisal Accuracy – Some Considerations That May Improve Your Timber Cruise” is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28 at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, an off-campus facility located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North.

This Bemidji Area Natural Resources Continuing Education Consortium presentation is open to the public and free of charge.

Presenting will be George Deegan, a forest mensurationist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, Grand Rapids. Deegan will discuss things to consider when planning a timber appraisal such as sampling considerations, plot sizes, volume determination and statistical measures of precision.

“An accurate estimate of timber volume is a necessary step in determining value,” Deegan said. “With the increase in stumpage over the past decade, accurate volume estimation is more important than ever.

The presentation is primarily targeted to be of interest to foresters who appraise timber. Printed copies of the PowerPoint presentation will be available to attendees.

Deegan possesses 27 years of experience working as a forester with the MNDNR Division of Forestry and received his education at the University of Minnesota, College of Forestry.

The talk is part of an on-going series of Bemidji Area Natural Resources Continuing Education Consortium presentations, usually offered on the third Monday of each month. Groups helping organize the natural resources consortium include the BSU Center for Environmental, Earth and Space Studies; the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; Norbord Minnesota; the Chippewa National Forest; Beltrami County; the Leech Lake Division of Resource Management; Ainsworth; and the Red Lake Reservation.
