May 1 employer support session to focus on the aging workforce

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A Regional Employer Support Network presentation entitled “Age Wave: Introduction to What Employers Need to Know to Survive the Aging of the Workforce” is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation, located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North. The session is free and open to all who are interested in learning about the topic.

Presenting will be Debbie Drinkard Grovum, Transition Institute Director, Northwest Technical College, Bemidji. Her presentation will provide an introduction to demographic trends affecting the workforce, discuss why this information is important to employers and explain how to start planning for these changes. Those attending will receive a planning guide and list of local and national resources.

“With the first round of baby boomers entering their 60s and labor shortages already apparent in some sectors, there is increasing recognition that younger workers and immigrants will not solve staffing challenges alone,” said Drinkard Grovum. “The good news is that ideas about retiring are changing and many baby boomers continue working past the traditional retirement age. Employers who are able to anticipate and plan for these changes will be in a better position to effectively meet their labor needs.”

Drinkard Grovum has been a counselor at NTC for more than 20 years and currently serves as a retirement coach and director of the Transition Institute which provides services related to life planning, education and employment needs of workers over 50.

The Regional Employer Support Network was formed after employers expressed the need for a network of professionals involved in human resources development and management. It usually meets the first Thursday of each month with regular sessions lasting two hours and quarterly sessions lasting longer.

CRI staff members help facilitate RESN activities, and organizations collaborating to support the group include North Country Health Services, North Country Business Products, Potlatch, Bi-CAP, Johanneson, Inc., Pinnacle Publishing and Anderson Fabrics.
