Safety council plans June 18 session on training requirements

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation will host a presentation June 18 entitled “Train Them Before They Do It” focusing on what safety topics and techniques employees need to be trained in and the required documentation of that training.

The program, presented by the Northern Minnesota Safety Council, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the CRI, an off-campus facility located at 3801 Bemidji Avenue North. A $25 fee will be charged to cover the price of materials and lunch. Advance registration is encouraged in order to guarantee lunch and materials

Presenting will be Miff Soderberg, chief executive officer of Minnesota Safety Incorporated, a private company providing safety and health consultation and training. Soderberg said safety managers or coordinators are often confused about whether to follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations pertaining to construction or to general industry. He will explain how to use one or both depending on what tasks employees are involved with and provide handout materials that can be helpful in making that determination.

“OSHA gives clear direction that we train our employees before they do the task and that we address any hazards related to the workplace,” Soderberg said.

Soderberg possesses more than 20 years of experience in providing adult education working with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. He serves as a provider of both training and written safety programs for OSHA/Department of Labor compliance in construction, general industry and the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The session is part of a monthly series sponsored by the CRI and the Northern Minnesota Safety Council and designed for those professionals who are responsible for the safety of their organizations. Offered the third Wednesday of each month, they feature experts from around the state discussing a variety of topics related to safety.

Groups on the Bemidji Area Safety Council helping organize the monthly safety presentations include Bi-County CAP, Beltrami County, North Central Door Company, Potlatch and Tri-Valley.

Individuals who wish to be added to a mailing list for the series or have questions should contact the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation at (218) 755-4900; toll free, (888) 738-3224; e-mail, cri@bemidjistate.edu; or on the Web at http://www.cri-bsu.org.
